Disposable camera app or live photo feed: which suits your wedding?

Two categories of wedding photo app get compared as if they're the same thing, and they aren't. The difference is one design decision: whether guests see the photos as they're taken, or not until you say so.

The disposable camera model

Guests get a fixed number of shots, often with a film-grain filter, and the results stay hidden until a reveal — usually the next morning. It's a deliberate recreation of dropping a roll at the chemist.

What it's good at: the novelty is real and guests engage with it. The shot limit makes people compose rather than spray. And because nobody sees the photos during the reception, nobody spends the reception looking at a feed.

What it costs you: the reveal is a single moment, and after it the format has done its job. A shot limit also means the guest who would have taken your forty best photos takes ten.

The live feed model

Photos appear in a shared gallery within seconds of being taken. Guests can see what everyone else is capturing, react to it, and add to it.

What it's good at: you can watch the day happen from angles you weren't at, during the day. It works for video as well as stills. And there's no cap on the guest who's genuinely good at this.

What it costs you: it's a live feed at a party, and some couples don't want that. If your instinct is that phones should be away during the ceremony, a live feed is working against you for that hour.

How to choose

• Want a novelty that gets people playing, and one lovely moment the morning after? Disposable.
• Want the most photos and video from the most angles? Live feed.
• Want guest video of the speeches? Live feed — disposable formats are built around stills.
• Worried about people on their phones all night? Disposable, or a live feed with a phones-away ceremony.
• Have guests who aren't confident with apps? Whichever one opens in a browser without an install.

You can do both

Nothing stops you running a disposable-style app for the novelty and a shared feed for coverage, and some couples do. If you only want one QR code on the table, pick the model that matches how you want the room to feel, not the one with the longer feature list.
